Distance Learning – Is a Quality Education Possible?

Many parents wonder about the benefits of educating their child using a distance learning homeschooling program. For most, the questions and concerns center on the area of quality. Parents wonder if their child will receive proper instruction from credentialed teachers. They are concerned about the quality of the instruction, especially in terms of accreditation and recognition. Additionally, parents express concerns over the preparation that their child will receive in a non-traditional academic setting.

For their parent, distance learning homeschool programs have developed into a popular and effective method of educating children. Whether a parent’s goals for their child include a basic high school diploma, or an eventual college degree, distance learning homeschooling programs have more than held their own against traditional public or private schools. Besides being able to provide effective, accredited instruction, distance learning schools are staffed by credentialed instructors who are dedicated to the individual needs and the overall success of the students they work for. In the end, it is hard to question the quality of the education that is provided by distance learning homeschooling programs.

  • Instructional Methods and Techniques – Parents who are considering enrolling their child in a distance learning program are often concerned about the way in which their child will be educated. Often, enrollment in a distance learning program represents letting go of some control – a prospect which worries some homeschooling parents. However, distance learning homeschools are very effective in assessing their students in order to determine the academic approach that will work best for the student. The incorporation of technology also adds both to the effectiveness of, and the overall satisfaction with, the process.
  • Teacher Qualifications- One major concern with education is general is the lack of qualified teachers. Unlike a traditional school where a classroom may be staffed by a non-credentialed teacher, or a teacher working outside of his or her area of expertise, a distance learning school that has been accredited is expected to be staffed by credentialed instructors.
  • More Individual Time – The flexible instructional schedule that makes up the curriculum of a distance learning homeschooling program is an additional benefit that adds to the overall quality of instruction. Not only are students given the chance to work at a pace that works best for them, but the fact that they receive their own personal instructor means that they will have increased individual time to ask questions and learn a concept.
  • Mastery Level Learning – Because students are allowed to move through a distance learning program at their own pace, they have the opportunity to either move past a lesson or concept that is already understood, while still reserving the chance to spend more time on a topic that they might not be understanding properly.

Concerns over the quality of the education received by students who attend distance learning homeschools are valid, but often unfounded. In the past several years, distance learning programs have proven that not only can they provide a valuable academic experience for their students, but their flexibility also frees their students up to experience many of the other aspects of growing up that can contribute to full and proper development.
